Robert I. Tilling is a volcanologist who recently retired after working 42 years with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), specializing in volcanic eruptions and their associated hazards. In between research assignments, he also served in several management positions: Scientist-in-Charge of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (1975-1976); Chief of the Office of Geochemistry and Geophysics (1976-1981); and, most recently, as Chief Scientist of the Volcano Hazards Program (1996-1999). He received his BA in geology from Pomona College (1958) and a Ph.D. from Yale University (1963). Dr. Tilling was in charge of USGS scientific studies when Mount St. Helens erupted catastrophically on 18 May 1980. Currently, he is a Scientist Emeritus with the USGS Volcano Hazards Team, continuing his volcano studies as well as consulting work on volcanic and other geologic hazards. Tilling resides with his wife (Susan) in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains west of Stanford University; they have two daughters (Bobbi, Karen) and three grandchildren (Peter, Daniel, and Sierra). When not studying volcanoes in the U.S. or abroad, Tilling enjoys sculpting, hiking, racquetball, tennis, classical and country-western music, and tasting of fine wines and foods.Geophysicist Steve Kirby will also be on hand to sign the map upon purchase. |
